A new library building for Chisala in Malawi, and an appeal to collect 1,000 books for it

Project Cost: £11100

In 2017 Trustees from DATUM FOUNDATION visited the new secondary school they are building in the remote village of Chisala in northern Malawi. They were shocked to discover that the 450 pupils attending school at that time had access to very few books and resolved construct a new library building and launched an appeal to collect 1,000 books.

We were really proud to have completed the building and collected a total of 2,091 books to donate to the new library. These included many informative and enjoyable books ranging from reference books such as encyclopaedias and dictionaries to lots of fiction for young adults including a set of Harry Potter novels and classics of world literature like Shakespeare and Dickens. A further 1,000 textbooks were purchased locally.

The new library now provides a valuable resource to the pupils of Chisala Secondary school and the wider community.
